Completion Certificate Instructions

Most of our customers take the online defensive driving course in order to receive a 10% reduction on their auto insurance premium. To qualify for this reduction, you must submit your certificate of completion to your insurer.

If you selected standard delivery of your certificate by mail, you should receive your certificate within seven business days after passing the final exam. The certificate will be sent in an envelope from Driver Training Associates, Inc. When you receive this document, you should physically deliver it or mail it to your insurance provider.

Once your insurance provider has received the certificate, a 10% discount will be applied to your liability, collision, and no-fault insurance premiums. This insurance reduction will remain in effect for three years. It can be renewed every three years by taking the point insurance reduction course again.

If you have questions about the insurance reduction not answered here, please consult our New York IPIRP Course FAQ.

How the Point Reduction Is Processed

The processing of your point reduction is automatic, meaning that you do not need to take any action to receive it. After you successfully complete the course, DTA will report your completion to the New York DMV. A notice will be entered on your driving record, and the DMV computer will automatically reduce your active point total by up to four points. The number of points to be reduced by your course attendance is determined by DMV; DTA has no control over this process.

Our New York IPIRP FAQ contains a great deal of additional information about how the New York point reduction works.
